Effective Homemade Cough Remedy = Apple Cider Vinegar + Honey

Apple cider vinegar (ACV) and honey is a natural folk remedy that has been around for hundreds of years.

It is a cure for cough and the common cold. It is effective, simple, natural and easy to make.

Honey and ACV are also generally less expensive than over-the-counter medications, and bring none of the side effects like dizziness or sleepiness.

Dry cough is one of the most distressing types of cough, which is associated with severe irritation, pain in the throat and hoarseness of voice.

Apple cider vinegar has very beneficial action, especially in the treatment and management of this type of dry cough.

Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar (ACV) stands as best cough remedy with its amazing health and skin benefits.

It creates an alkaline environment in your body, making it hard for viruses to survive.

ACV can help ease a nasty cough, soothe a sore throat, and help sinus drainage.

  • It has antibacterial, antiviral and antiseptic properties that fight against the microbes causing infection in the upper respiratory system.
  • It has an astringent property that helps to control the spread of infection in the throat and heals the infection to relieve you from cough.
  • It has anti-inflammatory and soothing properties that help you in reducing the pain and irritation in the throat and chest that caused due to cough.
  • It contains all the essential nutrients, live enzymes and amino acids which help to boost up the immune system and thus promotes quick relief from cough.
  • It is used to manage all forms of cough (especially dry cough) along with soothing the throat to get relief from soreness and itching in the throat.

Always use raw, organic, unfiltered and unpasteurized apple cider vinegar that contains “mother” in it, (which can be seen as a pulp on the bottom of the bottle), to treat any health problem including cough.

My favorite brand of Apple Cider Vinegar is Bragg Organic Raw Apple Cider Vinegar.

Raw Unfiltered Honey

Raw honey means the honey has not been pasteurized or heated to kill off the healthy nutrients. Honey is full of natural anti-oxidants, vitamins and minerals. It is touted to be anti-viral, anti-bacterial and anti-fungal.

Honey is great for relieving sore throats and suppressing coughs. It has long been known that honey can soothe irritated mucous membranes and thereby remove the irritation that is fueling the cough reflex.

Compounds like flavonoids and phenolic acids found in honey are thought to destroy the viruses that cause the common cold.

Honey’s antibacterial and antimicrobial properties can help boost the immune system and shorten the duration of a cold.

A research study has determined that children who get a dose of honey cough less and sleep better than those who get cough medicine with dextromethorphan (DM), the ingredient in most over-the-counter products for coughs.

Please note, honey should not be given to young infants under one year old, as honey can cause botulism in babies. Although it is rare, it can cause a serious paralytic disease.

Skip the honey from the grocery store. Instead, look for raw unfiltered honey that still contains all the beneficial compounds. Raw honey from a local beekeeper or Manuka honey is best. But watch out when you buy Manuka Honey!

The Apple Cider Vinegar And Honey Cough Remedy

1 – 2 tablespoons of raw, organic apple cider vinegar

1 tablespoon of honey, preferably raw and local or Manuka honey

1 cup of warm water

Mix all together.

I have found the above mixture to be tasty and enjoy sipping it slowly while it is warm . This is more effective than gulping it down because there is more exposure to the irritation in your throat.

This remedy can be taken as often as desired. Be prepared for quick relief!

For kids: Getting them to drink it can be a little bit of a challenge. (1 teaspoon – 1 tablespoon) of ACV is plenty for a young child.

You can also make a cough syrup for kids.

Cough Syrup

Mix the honey and apple cider vinegar in equal proportions in a small container and stir with a spoon until well mixed.

Give one teaspoon every 3 hours or as needed.

I mix up very small amounts at a time so that it always gets used up in a day or so.

Please note, honey should not be given to young infants under one year old, as honey can cause botulism in babies. Although it is rare, it can cause a serious paralytic disease.

Seek medical attention if your cough persists unabated after using the cider vinegar treatment for more than a week. In some instances, a cough can be the symptom of a more serious condition that can only be identified by a qualified health care provider.
