Himalayan Salt Lamp – Natural Air Purifier
Himalayan Salt Lamp – Natural Air Purifier
What is a Himalayan Salt Lamp?
Real Himalayan salt lamp is a solid block of Himalayan salt that have been hand-carved. Deep underground mines in Khewra, Pakistan, located on the western edge of the Himalayan Mountains, are the only source of true Himalayan pink salt.
The color of Himalayan salt lamps ranges from a light pink to a pinkish orange, due to the high concentration of minerals.
Within the hollowed-out center of this block of salt is a light bulb that emits both light and heat. A salt lamp is not a lamp at all if it doesn’t have the light and heat source within it. Without that, it’s just a block of salt.
Himalayan salt lamps also come in decorative baskets of crystal salt, with a light and heat source underneath that creates a soft pink glow. There are also candle holders.
How Do Himalayan Salt Lamps Work?
Salt lamps attract moisture from the air to the lamp surface, where, due to the warmth, the water evaporates quickly. The evaporation produces negative ions. Dust, pollen, dirt, pollutants, and allergens in the air all carry a positive charge, and that is how they can be suspended in the air. The negative ions neutralize these positive ions so they can no longer be airborne.
Numerous studies show that negative ions boost mood and improve breathing problems such as asthma. Symptoms from allergies, insomnia, migraines and other illnesses can subside.
Air purification is often the quintessential goal for most buyers. Air-purifying house plants are often bought for this reason as well. These lamps are like plants: the more the better. For best results, leave your lamp on 24/7.
The other most significant advantage of having Himalayan salt lamp is that it offers protection from harmful electromagnetic radiation.
EMFs are the electromagnetic frequencies emitted from electronics. All electronic equipment like televisions, computers, appliances and phones emit electromagnetic radiation. Growing research shows that the high levels of EMFs in our living environment contribute to disease.
There are even salt lamps that you can plug into your computers USB port to help reduce the radiation from the computer.
Though realistically, just one salt lamp would have trouble counteracting all the electromagnetic radiation from a room full of electronic equipment. The closer the salt lamp is to you the better job it will do at counteracting the negative effects of electromagnetic radiation.

How To Choose The Best Himalayan Salt Lamp
Here are 4 things to keep in mind before you buy a Himalayan crystal salt lamp:
Orange Color– The color ranges from a light pink to a pinkish orange. Darker colored lamps are typically considered higher quality. Lamps should specify that they are 100% Himalayan salt, as cheap imitations may use lower quality salt.
Size– The bigger the salt lamp, the bigger the affect. Smaller lamps weight 5-6 pounds while larger ones can weigh up to 50. A good general rule is that 1 pound of salt will filter approximately a 4×4 area of a room.
Rough Surface– The surface area of a salt lamp determines its hygroscopic potential, meaning that it attracts water to its surface and this water evaporates quickly due to the small amount of heat from the light source (this is also why salt lamps tend to sweat and appear wet in humid climates). Rougher lamps have a higher surface area than smooth and polished lamps, and are more effective at improving air quality.
Bulb– One other important factor to consider is the wattage of the light bulb that comes with your salt lamp. Without a strong enough wattage bulb, it won’t evaporate properly and can drip water into the base. Salt lamp should feel warm to the touch to work properly.
As a general guide, use a 15-watt bulb for salt lamps 10 pounds and under, a 25-watt bulb for between 10 and 20 pounds, and a 40 to 60-watt bulb for above 20 pounds. If your lamp isn’t warm or drips too much water, particularly in humid environments, try increasing the wattage of the light bulb within it.
Also remember that you need to use a heat producing light bulb like this for salt lamps. Low heat bulbs aren’t suitable. LED bulbs don’t accomplish this. Any good salt lamp will come with the right kind of light bulb, but remember this when you eventually replace them.

In 2017, thousands of Lumière Himalayan salt lamps sold at Michaels stores and through Amazon between July and November 2016 were voluntarily recalled. A fault meant that once the lamp was plugged in it could overheat and potentially catch fire – making them a shock and fire hazard.
It’s important to note that this affected a very small percentage of all lamps sold but does highlight the importance of buying a high quality Himalayan salt lamp from a reputable seller.
You’ll find Himalayan salt lamps at health food stores or on Amazon – this is the best seller or with stainless steel base.
