Onion Syrup For Cough And Cold
Onion syrup is a reliable and natural remedy for colds, cough and boosting immunity. It helps treat tonsillitis, pharyngitis and laryngitis, as well as sinusitis.
Not only it’s effective, but it taste so good that, unlike store-bought cough medicine, my kids actually enjoyed taking it!
Consumption of onion syrup is recommended mainly during the autumn and winter season, when our body is most susceptible to infections.

Onion syrup for cough
The main task of onion syrup is to clear the upper respiratory tract. Its expectorant properties help treat persistent coughs, both dry and wet.
Onion syrup primarily has an expectorant effect, mainly due to the compounds found in this vegetable, which dilute the secretions accumulated due to infection.
Therefore, it should not be used overnight. It is best to take it 2-3 hours before bedtime.
Basic recipe for onion syrup
To make onion syrup, you can use any variety of onion. For one medium onion, I give one large tablespoon of good, liquid honey. You can also use Manuka honey. If you don’t like honey, or if you are allergic to honey, you can replace it with cane sugar.
Ingredients:
2 medium organic onions
2 tablespoons of honey
Peel two onions and finely chop them. Put the onions in a jar, pour honey over them and leave them covered overnight. The onions should release their juices and mix with the honey.
The next day, thoroughly strain all the juice and pour into a separate jar or bottle. Such a syrup has a fairly thin consistency.
How to use onion syrup?
Children over 1 year old can be given onion syrup as a natural cough medicine. The maximum dose given to a toddler is 1 teaspoon three times a day.
PLEASE NOTE, HONEY SHOULD NOT BE GIVEN TO YOUNG INFANTS UNDER ONE YEAR OLD, AS HONEY CAN CAUSE BOTULISM IN BABIES. ALTHOUGH IT IS RARE, IT CAN CAUSE A SERIOUS PARALYTIC DISEASE.
Adults can confidently drink 3 tablespoons of syrup each day.
Onion syrup can also combat a child’s runny nose. All you need to do is wet a cotton ball with it and apply it to the nose hole (gently smear it near the nostrils).
How should onion syrup be stored?
Onion syrup should be stored in a tightly closed glass jar. It retains its valuable health-promoting properties for about 2 weeks, but must be kept in the refrigerator. At room temperature it can quickly lose its usefulness.
Onion syrup with additives
You can add freshly squeezed juice from half a lemon or lime to chopped onions with honey.
You can also add a few peeled and sliced cloves of garlic, or a small piece of fresh ginger root sliced thinly or grated.
You place all the extras at the very beginning together with the onions.
